KCC On Stage 2026: Discover Korean Performing Arts at the KCC! The Korean Cultural Center presents a recital by Baroque cellist Hyunkun Cho, a musician who has carved out his own distinct domain through deep musicality and refined period performance. In 2014, Cho made a name for himself in the early music scene by winning 3rd prize in the solo category at the MA Competition Brugge in Belgium. Having thoroughly studied period instruments at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) in Barcelona, and the Geneva University of Music, he has established a delicate interpretation based on 18th-century performance techniques and the intrinsic idiom of the instrument. In this performance, Cho presents J.S. Bach’s Complete Cello Suites, considered the pinnacle and "Bible" of the cello repertoire. Performing all six suites on a Baroque cello—which requires supporting the instrument solely with the knees without an endpin and drawing out the natural resonance of gut strings—is a sublime journey demanding intense concentration and physical stamina. The Korean Cultural Centre presents Shamanic Sensibility of Gayageum, an experimental concert that moves between the tradition of Korean shamanic music and the frontiers of contemporary composition. Shamanic Sensibility of Gayageum brings together the artistic vision of gayageum performer Seyoun Park, the bold imagination of composer Jaein Hwang, and the refined sensibility of Hawai'i-based composer Donald Reid Womack, whose work reflects a deep engagement with East Asian musical traditions. The three artists' musical languages converge in a shared exploration of mu-ak — Korean shamanic music — presenting new works for gayageum rooted in the rhythmic vitality and emotional depth of shamanic ritual. The title carries a dual meaning drawn from the characters 巫 (mu, shamanism) and 無 (mu, nothingness). Through this ritual-inspired musical journey, the performance invites the audience to step away from the sensations of everyday life and drift — as if the boundary between dream and reality dissolves — into a state of immersive absorption. The archaic emotions and structures of shamanism are expressed through an avant-garde yet refined musical language, reinterpreting the essence of the shamanic tradition: healing. She has drawn wide attention in the Korean traditional music world for her work restoring forgotten old-style gayageum sanjo from early gramophone recordings. She is the recipient of the String Instrument Award at the KBS Gugak Awards (2020), the Palgongsaya Gugak Award (2025), and the Special Jury Prize at the Seoul Arts Awards (2025). Hwayeon Lee Hwayeon Lee is an ajaeng performer who holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the Korea National University of Arts and currently serves as a guiding member of the Contemporary Gugak Orchestra at the National Gugak Center. She is a founding member of the ajaeng ensemble Bow+ing and a designated holder of Korea's Intangible Cultural Heritage in Jongmyo Jeryeak and Seoul's Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Bak Jong-sun style Ajaeng Sanjo. Jooho Kim Jooho Kim is a percussionist who graduated from the Department of Korean Traditional Music at Seoul National University. He has distinguished himself in the contemporary Korean music scene, receiving the Silver Prize at the 14th 21C Korean Music Project and the Bronze Prize at the 8th Youth Challenge Competition (2023). [Composers] Donald Reid Womack A Guggenheim Fellow and Professor of Composition at the University of Hawai'i, Donald Reid Womack has composed over 100 works, including more than 60 for Korean, Japanese, and Chinese instruments. His music has been performed at Carnegie Hall, Suntory Hall, and the Seoul Arts Center by ensembles such as the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony and the National Orchestra of Korea. Recognised as a pioneer of intercultural composition, he has been composing for Korean traditional instruments since 2008. Jaein Hwang Jaein Hwang is a composer and haegeum performer who graduated summa cum laude from Seoul National University and is currently pursuing a master's degree at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. Her music, which combines the precision of classical training with the freedom of jazz improvisation, is recognized for creating a unique realm often described as 'impressionist jazz.' Based on the solid skills he built through collaborations with jazz legends like Benny Golson, he is active on the global stage. Romain Habert Born into a music-loving family, Romain Habert began playing guitar at the age of 12 and studied at the University of Montreal and the Conservatory of Paris. As the co-leader of the band <Crafting Quintet> and a trusted sideman, he is highly regarded by many talents in the Parisian jazz scene. He is also active as a film score composer, expanding his own sensitive and evocative musical palette.

Korean Traditional Painting in Alter-age 2026: Pure and Hybrid The Korean Cultural Center Brussels, in collaboration with the Ilmin Museum of Art, presents the exhibition Korean Traditional Painting in Alter-age: Pure and Hybrid. The exhibition brings together Korean paintings from the late Joseon period through the 20th century alongside works by contemporary artists. Rather than treating Korean traditional painting as a fixed heritage, the exhibition highlights it as an evolving contemporary art form continuously reinterpreted today. Focusing on core methodology of traditional literati painting - facsimile (mosa), calligraphic copying (imseo), and stylistic emulation (bangjak)—it examines how historical learning and creative methods are adopted, transformed, and reconstructed by contemporary artists.  The exhibition brings together nine works from the collection of the Ilmin Museum of Art, including works by Jeong Seon, Kim Jeong-hui, and Jang Seung-eop, alongside 37 works by four contemporary artists: Song Ji-in, Choi Soo-ryun, Choi Hae-ri, and Hwang Gyu-min. Through a total of 46 works, the exhibition highlights the historical continuity and evolution of Korean painting from the late Joseon period to the present day. The Korean Cultural Center in Brussels is delighted to present its new promotional video, “KORdinary Day”—a heartwarming short story that shows how Korean culture has become woven into our ordinary days, even here in Brussels. 🎬 A KORdinary Day in Brussels The journey begins at the Grand Place, the beating heart of Brussels. A young man, immersed in a webtoon, crosses paths with a young woman. Webtoons—digital comics designed for scrolling on your phone—are one of Korea’s most popular art forms, read by millions worldwide and often adapted into hit K-Dramas like True Beauty and All of Us Are Dead. As they pass, their hands brush for just a moment. She carries a handbag adorned with a norigae, a traditional Korean ornament believed to bring happiness, protection, and sometimes even love. In Korean, there is a word for the invisible thread of fate that connects two souls across lifetimes: “inyeon.” Perhaps this fleeting encounter at Grand Place was inyeon… and destiny quietly begins to unfold. 🍗 Culture in Everyday Moments Their days continue separately, yet guided by the same rhythm. She stops at a Korean restaurant to enjoy Korean Fried Chicken, crispy, tender, and coated in sweet-and-spicy sauce—best paired with beer in the beloved Korean tradition of “chimaek.” He visits the Korean Cultural Center, discovering an exhibition on Korea’s independence movement, a reminder of the nation’s resilience and pride beyond its pop culture. Later, she enters a photobooth, a playful staple of Korean youth culture, while he explores the KCC library and picks up a manhwa, a Korean comic celebrated for its expressive art and storytelling. She sings her heart out at a noraebang (singing room), while he glimpses her again on the street, carrying a sunshade with a traditional Korean print. Their paths cross once more in a shop filled with K-beauty products and Korean snacks—sheet masks, serums, instant ramen, triangle kimbap—everyday items that have become global favorites. 🚋 A Fateful Ending Finally, as fate would have it, they board the same train home.   Spotlight on Korean Cinema at BIFFF 2025: Thrillers, Premieres, and more From April 8 to 20, 2025, at Brussels Expo, the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) will showcase a captivating selection of Korean cinema. This includes 10 feature films and one short film, with several making their European and Belgian premieres.  A highlight of the event is the new thriller, “An Old Lady with the Knife”, directed by MIN Kyudong, who will attend in person. The film, invited to the Berlin Film Festival this February, has yet to be released theatrically. Competing in BIFFF's prestigious Black Raven category dedicated to thrillers, it promises to be a standout. In the International Competition, “The Son” directed by NA Ji-hyun takes center stage. Joining the Black Raven Competition are thrillers “An Old Lady with the Knife” and Commission by SHIN Jae Min, while the animated masterpiece “Pig that Survived Foot-and-Mouth Disease”, directed by HUR Bum-wook, is nominated in the White Raven competition for innovative and undefinable films. For emerging filmmakers, the Emerging Raven Competition highlights “A Girl with Closed Eyes” by CHUN Sunyoung.
