In Haribo Kimchi, we find ourselves in a Pojangmacha, a typical late-night snack bar seen on the streets of South Korea. There, we meet several lost souls: a YouTuber, an eel, a toad and a rice cooker. They take us on a culinary journey, exploring food culture as a language that reveals the structure of society. In a series of poignant absurdist anecdotes, they recount the diaspora of Kimchi culture, cannibalism during the great famine, the sour pain of unadulterated racism and the deep umami taste of home. Following the success of his Hamartia Trilogy (2021), which delved into the far-reaching imperialism in East Asia, South Korean theatre maker and composer Jaha Koo returns to Kunstenfestivaldesarts with a new creation. His patented hybrid style combines music, innovative video and robotic performers to craft a reflection on cultural assimilation with all its conflicts and paradoxes. - [Extended] Exhibition on traditional Korean culture
- [Extended] Exhibition on traditional Korean culture March 4 - June 21, 2024 @ Korean Cultural Center The Korean Cultural Center Brussels is delighted to inaugurate its first exhibition of 2024, a unique showcase of Korean traditional culture encapsulated within three distinct “boxes”. These boxes are themed around the Hanok, a traditional Korean house composed of various spaces and rooms. Resembling “kits”, these boxes are replicas of traditional Korean elements, offering visitors a glimpse into three aspects of Korean life: one box represents the life of a man, another the life of a woman, and the third encapsulates general Korean culture. Each box is a microcosm of various unique elements. The exhibition will also feature traditional instruments and skillfully crafted furniture. Additionally, we invite you to partake in a Hanbok experience, where guests can try on traditional clothing and capture the moment with photographs. This exhibition promises a comprehensive and immersive journey into the heart of Korean culture. In the Hanok, a quintessential traditional Korean house, distinct zones were allocated for men and women, reflecting their unique roles in traditional Korean culture. This is why the upcoming exhibition features different types of boxes for each gender. The woman’s box showcases her role in sewing, while the man’s box illustrates his duty to study and appreciate the arts, such as drawing or playing an instrument. This gender distinction, a significant aspect of traditional Korean culture, will be exemplified in the exhibition. The Exhibition on Korean traditional culture offers a direct and immersive experience of Korean culture. Key elements of a Hanok, namely the Sarangbang, Anbang, and Annyeong, will be on display in the hall of the Korean Cultural Center. But what exactly are these elements? Stay tuned to find out in this enlightening journey into the heart of Korean tradition. Sarangbang box As previously mentioned, both men and women had distinct tasks and roles in traditional Korean culture, which is reflected in the elements of their respective boxes. In the Sarangbang, or “the space for men where they studied and greeted guests”, one can find a desk equipped with stationery composed of four writing supplies, among other elements designed to make the study session more delightful and enjoyable. Furthermore, recognizing the importance of physical exercise, a bow and arrow also find their place in the Sarangbang. The roles of men in traditional Korean culture were often carried out outside the living area, in a private room within the household territory. This exhibition provides a unique insight into these aspects of traditional Korean life. The women’s box, known as the Anbang, is a testament to the traditional roles of women in Korean culture. The Anbang, which translates to “a place to nurture children who will carry on the family name”, is often considered the most private room in the house. Typically tucked away in a secluded corner, it was a space where men were not permitted to enter freely. The Anbang box is filled with items that reflect the woman’s role in the household. It contains sewing utensils, an ironing board, a brazier, decorative hair accessories, and other items related to child care and housekeeping. Among these items, visitors will also find beautiful crocheted pieces crafted by the women themselves. These tasks were of utmost importance in traditional Korean culture, as the Hanok was a significant element and the upbringing of children determined the values and education of future generations. This exhibition offers a unique window into these aspects of traditional Korean life. Despite the contrasting roles and duties assigned to each gender in traditional Korean society, as reflected in the distinct aims of the previously described boxes, there exists a common ground in the form of the Annyeong box. This box serves as a comprehensive repository of all things Korean, housing the Taegeukgi, the Korean Alphabet, and a world globe. The Annyeong box is an invaluable resource for those interested in learning Korean, offering opportunities to practice handwriting, learn pronunciation of Korean words, and understand the geographical location of this remarkable country. This unifying element underscores the shared cultural heritage that transcends the gender-specific roles in traditional Korean society. Anbang Box Immerse yourself in the richness of Korean culture at the Korean Cultural Center, located in the heart of Europe’s capital. This unique exhibition offers a deep dive into the societal norms and traditional elements of Korea. Experience the elegance of Hanbok, Korea’s traditional attire, firsthand. Gain insights into traditional Korean instruments and furniture, enhancing your understanding of the country’s rich heritage. The exhibition also features interactive screens, providing you with the opportunity to learn basic Korean words and the alphabet. Don’t miss this chance to explore and appreciate Korean culture from within. We look forward to welcoming you. Opening event! Trying on Hanbok : from 2 pm to 5 pm on March 4th *Experience order is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

After a few years of living abroad and experimenting with short films, he moved back to Korea, started to work as a TV show producer, and in 1996 he made his debut with The Day a Pig Fell into a Well, and shocked the Korean filmmaking industry. His movies helped as an inspiration as graduation films in Korea’s film schools. He has now released more than twenty films, nominated to different awards, among them Cannes 63rd Edition, Gijon International Film Festival, Berlin’s Film Festival and much more! Also, he has also won many awards in his mother country as well as International Competitions. Hong Sangsoo is nowadays one of the best film directors that Korea has, his style is very particular and that is the reason for his successful career. Here is a list of the different films that will be presented in Cinémathèque de Luxembourg and the screening schedules: Oki’s Movie (2010): Screening: April 30th at 18:30h May 20th at 20:45h 4 short love stories. Last one, Oki’s movie is about a film student and her affairs with two different men: her university professor, and another filmmaker student. Film that is represented in diverse perspectives and timelines. “ The film feels more like an exercise than a fully developed, interlinked narrative — it’s all a bit enervating and not especially penetrating.” (Hollywood Reporter) On the beach at night alone (2017): Screening: May 7th at 18:30h Love story between a woman and a married man. Younghee decides to take a trip to Hamburg to visit a couple of friends. Daily conversations about love, life and adventures will confuse her to the point of asking herself about how important is love in your own life. “On the Beach” feels more raw and personal than some of Mr. Hong’s other work. His explorations of the miscommunications between men and women can turn into meditations, at times acute, at times coy, on the nature of cinema and the reliability of narrative” (New York Times) In another country (2012): Screening: May 9th at 18:30h May 23th at 20:30h Mother and daughter escape from their debt to a beach town. The young lady, due to boredom, decides to start writing a script. She ends up having three different varieties, all of them located in the same spots and protagonist by the same actors. Anne, the main character, is a french woman visiting the town and she ends up falling in love with different men. Different movies with the same structure, isn’t that curious? "He is interested neither in conventional realism — he drifts further away from it with each film — nor in equally conventional displays of self-consciousness, but rather in staging collisions between those two styles. A movie may be a representation of the world, but it is also something that happens in the world, which means that sustaining a cinematic illusion and breaking it are equally beside the point". (New York Times) Cine-Conference Hong Sangsoo / Tale of cinema (2005): Screening: May 13th at 19:00h Film divided into two parts. First part: a couple that just met that night end up swallowing a pill to end up with their lives after their attempt to spend the night together. Second part: the girl from the first part goes out from the cinema, and a man follows her. "Writer and curator Dennis Lim’s new book, Tale of Cinema, is concerned with these and other contradictions of sensibility in Hong’s work" (Slant Magazine) Right now, wrong then (2015): Screening: May 16th at 18:30h May 30th at 20:30h Movie with two parts, each part is the same story but different somehow. A young painter meets a famous film director, they go to her art workshop and end up getting drunk with soju and attending her friend's party. Both start getting involved with each other, he is married but they have an affair. Second part starts. “Halfway through its running time, “Right Now, Wrong Then” starts over, reversing its title and reintroducing its central pair. They do some of the same things, but the tenor and texture of their time together is altered in ways both subtle and glaring.” (New York Times) Woman is the future of man (2004): Screening: May 29th at 18:30h Two old friends have a predilection for the same woman, without knowing it. Both had an adventure with Sun-Hwa. They decide to reunite the three of them bringing back melancholic memories and more. Hong delineates character with the lightest of strokes, and his extremely long, serene takes provide well-defined time and space for the vast emotional shifts of tiny moments to register. He poses bodies with a natural yet balletic equipoise: rarely have intimate love scenes been at once so bluntly physical yet so dignified and dramatically precise. - SAC on Screen
- In partnership with Seoul Arts Center, we're thrilled to announce "SAC on Screen" - bringing captivating Korean performing arts right to your screens! ✨ Established in 1988, the Seoul Arts Center stands as a beacon of art and culture in South Korea, showcasing a diverse array of domestic and international performances. Get ready for an immersive experience featuring: 🌟 'Into Thin Air', contemporary dance (55 mins) | May 14, 2024 | 1 PM, 5 PM @ Korean Cultural Center 〈Into Thin Air〉 is a trash art based, real life inspired visual theater piece. It is about emptiness. It deals with the disappearance of value and cause, the loss of the present in the rush for a better future. Into Thin Air is set in a world of commercial values and soap opera morals. The piece's dramatic aspects, filled with dark humor, are derived from the true stories if there are 9 participants. As the piece unfolds, the dancers stretch their physical boundaries, as the characters in the piece are stretching their realistic boundaries to fit comics-like prototypes. Through rhythmical movement sections and beautifully crude visual imagery, short stories emerge, exposing a vast emotional field in which the 9 characters' virtuosity move around. 🌟 'Dance Speaks', contemporary dance (83 mins) | May 16, 2024 | 1 PM, 5 PM @ Korean Cultural Center <Dance Talks> is a lecture performance featuring dancers from various fields, including traditional Korean dance, contemporary dance, ballet, and street dance, who reflect on contemporary dance through dance and narrative, focusing on the specific body of the dancer. Dancers' bodies embody the illusion of beauty on stage, but in reality, they are often injured or deformed as professionals who use their bodies. In the performance, the dancers tell autobiographical stories about their bodies and use their own experiences with health and injury to critique the illusions that surround dance, and also show their dedication to dance on stage. 🌟 'Dallae Story', non-verbal puppet show (70 mins) | June 6, 2024 | 1 PM, 5 PM @ Korean Cultural Center <Dallae Story> is a story of three families who cherish the simple things in their lives together. It is a story of childhood memories that everyone has, and how the small pleasures of a happy and warm day can help us through the inevitable hard times. The unique form of actors and puppets performing together uses a variety of media, including objects, theater, mime, Korean dance, shadow play, and 3D video. It is a non-verbal puppet theater that uses lyrical dance and implied gestures to convey the content, making it easy for anyone to understand and relate to.
