(KMFB)

This year, the Korean Cultural Center in Brussels launches the first edition of the Korean Music Festival, in a unique collaboration with Bozar. OPENING

Sook-sun Ahn Pansori, Traditional Vocal

23rd September 2015, WED : 20:00 : BOZAR, Studio : 12 €

*Co-Production: BOZAR

Pansori is often described as a Korean form of opera. A singing narrator tells a dramatic story, accompanied by one percussionist. Singer Sook-sun Ahn opens the Korean Music Festival with the performance of the classic and tragically amusing pansori play Heungbo-ga, evoking jealousy, generosity, reward, rivalry and reconciliation between two brothers.

Kun-woo Paik Recital Piano

30th September 2015, WED : 20:00 : BOZAR, Hall M : 12 €

*Co-Production: BOZAR

Kun-woo Paik is one of the greatest pianists of his generation, and arguably the most renowned Korean pianist of all time. His career started at the age of 10, whilst playing with the Korean National Orchestra, before playing on stages throughout the world. He will join the Korean Music Festival as a guest of honor, performing his interpretation of the Preludes Op. 11 by Scriabin and the Sonata No. 1 by Rachmaninoff..

Korean & Belgian Ensemble Concert with soloist Roby Lakatos

2nd October 2015, FRI : 20:00 : Amuz (Antwerp) : 17 €

For the occasion of the Korean Music Festival, 14 young talented musicians from Korea and Belgium join musical forces for an interpretation of work by Korean composer Young-jo Lee, the Korean folk classic Arirang and other works by J. Blockx, A.F. Servais and H. Vieuxtemps. The concert will be accompanied by violinist Roby Lakatos.

Sunwoo JungA Singer-songwriter with SIOEN

3rd October 2015, SAT : 19:00 : Acienne Belgique, AB Club : 7 €

Today, Korea is renowned as a cutting edge high tech society, so the Korean Music Festival would be incomplete without some innovative contemporary music. Singer-songwriter and jazz vocalist Sunwoo JungA shines on stage with her unique charisma and kaleidoscopic arrangements. She will be accompanied by special guest SIOEN, a singer-songwriter from Belgium. After substantial success in Belgium and Europe, his song Cruisin’ also became a big hit on Korean radio.

Geomungo Factory New tradition

7th October 2015, WED : 20:00 : BOZAR, Studio : €12

*Co-Production: BOZAR

A geomungo is a traditional Korean zither, and Factory refers to the Warholian workshop or atelier – quite different to an assembly line. Geomungo Factory experiment with contemporary music composed for 1000 year old instruments, resulting in a refreshing mix up that sounds like nothing else.

SU:M New tradition

14th October 2015, WED : 20:00 : BOZAR, Studio : €12

*Co-Production: BOZAR

For SU:M, music is a way to express the essence of living. Group members Ji-ha Park and Jung-min Seo tell colorful stories through the language of music. Their ambitious aim is to start a new era of Korean traditional music incorporating a contemporary spirit, and lessons learned from living a modern life.
