PungNyu
Court Music Orchestra from the National Gugak Center
To celebrate the 55th anniversary of Korea-EU diplomatic relations, Korean Cultural Center Brussels and National Gugak Center of Korea present ‘Pungnyu Eumak’ with the collaboration of Royal Conservatory of Brussels.
The Court Music Orchestra from National Gugak Center will be performing the essence of traditional Korean music including Yeongsanhoesang, Gagok, Gasa, and Sijo.
Gagok, in particular, was listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010.
Pungnyu Eumak (Pungnyu music)
Pungnyu music was enjoyed and adored among the literati and the members of high society during the Joseon dynasty. Today, it represents the elegant and distinguished part of Korean culture. The tempo of pungnyu music is relatively slow and the space between the sounds remains clearly with light vibrato to express the tranquility and refinement of Korean culture.
The literati during the Joseon dynasty learned music and performed privately only for themselves to achieve a peaceful mind and purified lifestyle. This has been developed into a special musical tradition, called jeongak, meaning proper music. Genres of pungnyu music include string ensemble, vocal genres, an instrumental solo, and a duet. Representative repertoires are Boheosa, Yeomillak, Yeongsanhoesang, and gagok songs.
Artists
Court Music Orchestra
The Court Music Orchestra of the National Gugak Center is passing down the legacy and tradition of court music from ancient dynasties. The orchestra mainly performs Jongmyojeryeak, designated as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, Sujecheon, Yeongsan Hoesang, Pungnyu music, and traditional pieces reflecting Korea’s unique singing style.
National Gugak Center
The National Gugak Center (NGC) is the headquarters of traditional Korean performing arts. It maintains a variety of assets ranging from the long-standing traditions of court and popular music and dance to contemporary musical compositions for today’s audiences.
NGC’s four pre-eminent performing groups, which are Court Music Orchestra, Folk Music Group, Dance Theater, and Contemporary Gugak Orchestra, have been at the forefront of reviving ancient court music and dance, traditional chamber music of non-professional musicians, and old popular music that thrived among common people. Furthermore, by conducting studies of the long tradition of Korean music NGC not only bolsters the preservation and transmission of Korean performing arts, but also elevates these traditions to entirely new heights. In addition, it offers diverse educational programs that promote Korean performing arts at home and abroad.
