[Holland Dance Festival] Eun-Me Ahn and Min Hee Bervoets
After Korean National Contemporary Dance Company’s
<Immixture>, there would be a series of contemporary dance events
presenting Korean dance scenes to the Benelux region. Ahn Eun-Me, also known as ‘the Pina Bausch of
Seoul’, visits Holland Dance Festival 2018 with the piece <Dancing
Grandmothers>.
This work is a part of her trilogy which respectively
shows different generations, focusing on the older women’s attitudes toward dance
and ageing. Ahn Eun-Me combines Korean folklore with electro-music so that the
dancers, ordinary women, can express their emotion without dilution. She
already mesmerized Theatre National de la Colline with a massive floor, funky
sounds and overwhelming energy.
There is another remarkable figure in this year’s
Holland dance festival ; Min Hee Bervoets with her brand-new company HNDRD. Min Hee is a Belgian choreographer who is well
known as a jury of the programme <So You Think You Can Dance>. As a foundling,
Min Hee was taken in by the Holt Children’s Services in Seoul and after she
moved to Belgium with adoptive parents. Having studied at Antwerp Conservatoire
and won several competitions for young choreographers, Min Hee accumulated
reputation as a choreographer with being designated as ‘Ambassador of
Contemporary dance’ for Belgium.
Min Hee has found a varied group of dancers with different backgrounds. In this
year’s Holland dance festival, she would throw some interesting questions to
the audience by presenting her intellectual piece <One Limited Space>.
With dancers representing peculiar characteristics, the audience confront
questions as such - what is the difference between the brain of a man and of a
woman? What happens if two brains inter-act together?
During the festival period, there would be also
workshops held by Ahn Eun-Me and Min Hee Bervoets. It seems the very first year
for introduction of Korean contemporary dance trends, launched by
<Immixture> and theatre Varia, is followed well thanks to these two
female choreographers.
