In the southern city of Gwangju, a student uprising takes place in the aftermath of the assassination of military dictator Park Chung Hee, followed by brutal reprisals and a declaration of martial law. As 14-year-old Dong-ho searches for his friend Jeong-Dae among the increasing number of bodies, he finds himself entangled in circumstances beyond his control that culminate in a confrontation with the military. Five years later, the military dictator Chun Doo Hwan holds the country in his grip. His harsh regime of curfews, censorship and plainclothes police has kept the details of the massacre under wraps. But the dead, left unburied and mourned, still haunt the lives of the survivors, who are now risking their own lives by resisting the regime. In this richly structured lament, Han Kang displays a masterful mastery of tone as she moves between the harsh reality of oppression, darkness, incoherent fantasy and the poetry of the everyday. About the author – Han Kang Han Kang (1970) was born in Gwangju, Korea. When she was ten years old, she moved with her family to Seoul, where she studied Korean literature at Yonsei University. Book Talk - 'La philosophie selon Squid Game (Philosophy according to Squid Game)' Event Date 12-10-2022
Book Talk - 'La philosophie selon Squid Game (Philosophy according to Squid Game)' October 12, 2022 / 18h30 @ Korean Cultural Center Free, registration required Language: French Join author Olivier Dhilly for a lecture on his book "La philosophie selon Squid Game" in which he will discuss the philosophical questions of Squid Game. Last year, K-drama Squid Game became a global hit and made everyone talk about its depicted ultra-violent universe. Over the episodes and the ordeals experienced by the characters, we are faced with a lot of questions: What value should be given to human existence? What is a just society? To what extent are we willing to sacrifice our lives and those of others? Much more than just entertainment, Squid Game is a great philosophical question box! With the help of Rousseau, Kant, Plato, Nietzsche, and many others, Olivier Dhilly, associate professor philosophy, tries to answer all these philosophical questions posed by the hit series. Free, registration required CLICK HERE to register through Eventbrite About the Book "Squid Game is the world we live in," said Hwang Dong-hyuk, writer and director of the series with which Netflix broke all ratings records. This quote may seem very radical and excessive since the world is depicted as a camp wherein deadly games are organized. And yet, far from simply offering us suspenseful entertainment in which the spectator wonders at best what he would do or how he would react, Squid game presents us in an implacable way the spectacle of a dream become a nightmare which does not end but with which we become accustomed to living. Moral questions then constantly arise: what is the value of human existence, of work, of money? Are we free to dispose of our life? How far can we risk it?, etc. but isn't the fundamental question first of all political, isn't it that, to use the expression of the philosopher Hannah Arendt, of "the 'collapse of a world' which gradually becomes dehumanized while still feeling familiar to us? The success of this series, which immediately went beyond the borders of Korea, could then well be an opportunity to think about our world, the one in which we live, the one in which we would like to live. Then by looking at this through a philosophical point of view, we can try to understand not only what humans are capable of doing to themselves, but also on what terms they can expect. About the Author Olivier Dhilly is an associate professor of philosophy. After having taught in preparatory classes, he now teaches at the lycée d’Etat de la Légion d’Honneur of Saint Denis and at the Institute of judicial studies of Paris2-Panthéon Assas and at the Sévigné college. He is also a lecturer for companies or legal professionals and has been giving lectures for more than 10 years at the “Mardis de la philo” on questions of contemporary philosophy. He is the author of several works of philosophy including among others " Les grandes questions de la philosophie ", " Comprendre la philosophie " at the éditions Elipses, " Les plus belles histoires de la philosophie " at the éditions de l’Opportun which published its latest book “La philosophie selon Squid Game”. He also served as project manager at the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences within the Institut de France.
