Hangul [한글] Hangul is the Korean alphabet and the official writing system for the Korean language. It is also a different name for the “Hunminjeongeum”, which was created by King Sejong in the 15th century in order to make all of his people read, learn, and express themselves freely regardless of social status. *Hunminjeongeum [훈민정음] *Please click on the title of each event itself to reserve your place to attend the workshop, performance, film screening, lecture, etc. Thursday, September 22, 2022 ○︎ [Conference] by National Institute of Korean Language - 14h00 - 18h00 @ Multi Hall, Korean Cultural Center * On the occasion of the 576th Hangul Day, ‘2022 Korean Language Experts Overseas Training’ will be conducted by the National Institute of the Korean Language, for Korean language instructors currently active in Belgium and Luxembourg. ** Lecturer: Kim Mi-Hyeon, Hwang Seon-young Friday, September 23, 2022 ○︎ [Workshop] Hangul x Korean Paper Collage - 18h00 - 20h00 @ Library, Korean Cultural Center * A workshop to create pieces of artwork using Hangeul’s initial consonants as materials on beautiful traditional Korean paper. ** Instructor: Yunhee YANG ○︎ [Media & Contemporary Dance] "Triptych [A]", Choreographic navigation by n+n Corsino, Jae Duk KIM - @ Multi-hall, Korean Cultural Center - Reservation 1st performance / Fri 23 Sep., 2022 at 14:00 2nd performance / Fri 23 Sep., 2022 at 17:00 choreographic navigation Two signatures of the movement make up Triptyque [A], that given by the gestures of the performers and that provided by the elements of the calligraphic texts. n + n Corsino have produced a series of creations on the relationship of movement between calligraphy and choreography. This creation is the result of an order made as part of the Year of France in Korea, 2016-2017. It brings together Korean and French artists and partners. Joining the project are dancers and performers Bo-ra Kim and Jae-duk Kim, calligrapher Mihwi Park and young author Yu-joo Han. Korean Book Club - The Cabinet, Un-Su Kim Discover Korean literature and explore its various themes in KCC's monthly Korean Book Club In October we are going to discuss the novel The Cabinet by Un-Su Kim. ▪ Language: English (Korean Book Club gatherings are alternatively held in French, Dutch and English) ▪ Date: Thursday, October 20, 19h00-21h00 ▪ Venue: Korean Cultural Center Brussels ▪ Free - Read the novel and apply for the book club meeting. *The participants have to procure the book themselves. CLICK HERE to apply for the book club meeting. Summary / About the book- The Cabinet (EN) Translated by Sean Lin Halbert Published by Angry Robot Cabinet 13 looks exactly like any normal filing cabinet. Except this cabinet is filled with files on the ‘symptomers’, people whose weird abilities and bizarre experiences might just mark the emergence of a new species. But to Mr Kong, the harried office worker who spends his days looking after the cabinet, the symptomers are just a headache; from the woman whose doppelganger broke up with her boyfriend, to the man with a ginkgo tree growing from his fingertip. And then there’s that guy who won’t stop calling, asking to be turned into a cat… A richly funny and fantastical novel about the strangeness at the heart of even the most ordinary lives, from one of South Korea’s most acclaimed novelists. “The Cabinet is a sly, whimsical satire of life in late-stage capitalism, slippery and surreal… a kind of echoing chamber in which the comic, heartbreaking and terrifying bounce against, amplify and distort one another.” – Amar El-Mohtar , The New York Times “What begins as a rather whimsical set of stories turns into a much darker novel, raising issues of difference and acceptance, what people must do to survive, and what is truly monstrous.” – the Guardian About the author – Un-Su Kim Un-Su Kim made his debut as a writer in 2002 through the Jinju News Fall Literary Contest with short stories, Easy Breezy Writing Class and Dan Valjean Street and the 2003 DongA Ilbo Spring Literary Contest with his mid-length novel Farewell, Friday. His first full-length novel The Cabinet received the 12th Munhakdongne Novel Award.

Book Talk - 'Shrimp to Whale: South Korea from the Forgotten War to K-Pop' About this event Join author Ramon Pacheco Pardo for a book talk about his book 'Shrimp to Whale: From the Forgotten War to K-Pop' and learn about the incredible rise of South Korea, from colonization and civil war to today’s thriving nation. Date/Place Thursday, October 6, 2022 / 19:00 – 20:30 @ Korean Cultural Center Brussels Free, registration required CLICK HERE to register through Eventbrite About the Book South Korea has a remarkable history. Born from the ashes of imperial domination, partition and a devastating war, back in the 1950s there were real doubts about its survival as an independent state. Yet South Korea endures: today it is a boisterous democracy, a vibrant market economy, a tech powerhouse, and home to the coolest of cultures. In just seventy years, this society has grown from a shrimp into a whale. What explains this extraordinary transformation? For some, it was individual South Koreans who fought to change their country, and still strive to shape it. For others, it was forward-looking political and business leaders with a vision. Either way, it’s clear that this is the story of a people who dreamt big, and whose dreams came true. 'Shrimp to Whale' is a lively history of South Korea, from its millennia-old roots, through the division of the Peninsula, dictatorship and economic growth, to today’s global powerhouse. About the Author Ramon Pacheco Pardo is Professor of International Relations at King’s College London, and KF-VUB Korea Chair at the Brussels School of Governance. He is also a non-resident adjunct fellow with the Center for Strategic Studies Korea Chair, and a non-resident fellow at the Sejong Institute. Ramon has lived twice in South Korea, and remains a regular visitor there for both work and leisure. He regularly teaches and provides media commentary about the country. *Note: This Book Talk will be held in English. Published by Hurst Publishers
