Discover the sounds of the Geomungo, a representative and indigenous string instrument from Korea. Two astonishing musicians, Joonyoung Kim, a Geomungo player, and Baudouin de Jaer, a music composer will take us to an experimental musical world enriched by Geomungo. It will be a broad and intriguing repertoire that includes a mixture of contemporary to traditional sounds.

Kim Joonyoung

Kim Joonyoung is a Geomungo player and multidisciplinary artist. He graduated from Seoul National University(PhD) specializing in Korean Traditional music. As a Geomungo player, he discovers the depth and philosophy behind Korean traditional music while working with the most recent contemporary music as well. Furthermore, Kim’s practice is broad which includes writing, directing music series, and facilitating workshops in several countries such as Germany, U.S., Hungary, and Mexico. He served as the concertmaster of the Contemporary Gugak Orchestra from the National Gugak Center and currently works as an artistic director of the project group GeoinArtLab. Kim is the winner of the 24th National Gugak Competition (Grand Prize).

Baudouin de Jaer

Baudouin de Jaer is a Belgian composer born in Aalst on March 9, 1962. He studied composition in Liège with Philippe Boesmans, Frederic Rzewski and Henri Pousseur. Since 1986, he has written several compositions including Lucy (1993) for orchestra, the opera La Forêt, Le Désert, L’Argent (Ce qui vit en nous) (2017). Since 1991, he has opened spaces for musical creations open to everyone with or without prior musical knowledge. From 2004 he became interested in Salpuri dance and Korean instruments. At Lion Dance (2014), commissioned by the Korean National Orchestra, will follow a cycle of solo pieces for the geomungo low-pitched six-string Korean zither, including the opera in the geomungo style Byeongchang The Sparkling Dance of the Salmon Swarm (2020) and Five Traces (2021). In 2010, the choreographer Kyung-a Ryu and Baudouin de Jaer together founded NOODIK productions (creations of dance/visual art and contemporary music). Baudouin de Jaer is a member of the Forum de la création musicale of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
