The Hangeul Nuri Foundation Announces the Launch of “Hangeul Festa 2026,” a Global Video Contest Connecting the World through Hangeul


• Participants will transcribe the speech sounds of their own languages using modern Hangeul or “Nuri Hangeul,” proposed by the Hangeul Nuri Foundation

• The foundation has revised the common rules of Nuri Hangeul, first introduced last year, d tranion guidelines for four languages, including English Chinese

• Submissions will be accepted for approximately three months until August 13, with a total of USD 62,000 in prize money awarded to 99 winners, including USD 10,000 for the Sejong Award Gr Prize winner




The Hangeul Nuri Foundation, hereinafter referred to as “Hangeul Nuri,” announced the launch of Hangeul Festa 2026, a global video contest that invites people around the world to communicate through Hangeul. Now in its fourth year, Hangeul Festa is a video contest in which participants create videos introducing stories from diverse cultures around the world transcribe them in Hangeul or Nuri Hangeul. The contest is open to all foreign nationals.


This year’s Hangeul Festa 2026 will again feature “Nuri Hangeul,” first introduced by Hangeul Nuri through last year’s Hangeul Festa. Nuri Hangeul is a tranion system proposed by Hangeul Nuri that enables the sounds of various world languages to be written in Hangeul, based on the principles letterforms of Hunminjeongeum. To represent the sounds of different languages, the system restores symbolizes obsolete Hunminjeongeum letters that are no longer used in modern Korean, allowing sounds not found in Korean to be written in Hangeul. Hangeul Nuri has revised the common rules of Nuri Hangeul announced last year , accordingly, has d the tranion guidelines for four languages: English, Chinese, Spanish, Japanese. These s will be applied to this year’s contest.


Hangeul Festa 2026 will be held in two categories: the Hangeul Category the Nuri Hangeul Category. In the Hangeul Category, participants will use the modern Hangeul writing system, which consists of 14 basic consonants 10 basic vowels. In the Nuri Hangeul Category, participants will transcribe the speech sounds of their own languages based on the Nuri Hangeul tranion guidelines for the four languages proposed by the Hangeul Nuri Foundation. Both categories share the same themes: introducing traditional food or traditional games from the participant’s country or ethnic culture. Participants may choose one of the two themes, create a video of two to five minutes in length, submit it with subtitles that transcribe the speech sounds of their language in modern Hangeul or Nuri Hangeul.


The contest will run for approximately three months, from May 15 to August 13. The winning entries will be announced on October 1 through the official Hangeul Festa website. One overall gr prize winner will be ed from across both categories to receive the Sejong Award USD 10,000 in prize money. Including the gr prize winner, a total of 99 winners, from first to fifth place in each category, will receive prize money official certificates amounting to a total of USD 62,000.


Hangeul Festa 2026 is hosted by the Hangeul Nuri Foundation supported by the Korean Language Society the Hunminjeongeum Society. To further its mission of promoting the globalization of Hangeul, Hangeul Nuri introduced Nuri Hangeul last year through its own research as a tranion system capable of representing the sounds of various world languages as they are spoken. “As Hangeul Festa 2026 presents an d version of Nuri Hangeul first introduced last year, we hope to see a wide range of creative attempts to express the sounds of world languages through Hangeul Nuri Hangeul,” said the Hangeul Nuri Foundation.
